Corinth was an ancient city famous for sexual immorality and debauchery, and Christians there were called to be in the city, but not of it. They were to love non-Christians while striving for holiness in the church. Paul instructs the church in Corinth to discipline themselves in order to love God and be a gracious witness to the world.
