From Matthew we know this man is young, from Luke that he is a ruler, and from all that he is rich: the rich young ruler. Mark’s account is the longest of the Gospels and includes intimate personal details such as the ruler’s claim to have kept the law "my from youth" and his "disheartening" response to Jesus' direct eye-contact and love for him. He is the only singled-out person in Mark that Jesus loves. These details make a compelling case that this is Mark’s personal testimony. Like he did with marriage and children, Jesus gives life-transforming teaching on possessions.
