Similar to the way He traces murder to the root of anger, Jesus connects adultery to the source of lust. Whereas anger is usually visible in some way, lust often lurks secretly in hearts and minds. Jesus is not out to create decent, middle class, religious people, but disciples who hunger and thirst for righteousness. He reveals we are far more sinful than we thought—truly poor in spirit—and then cleanses and empowers us to walk free.
