My son, keep my words,
And treasure my commands within you.
Keep my commands and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.
Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
And call understanding your nearest kin,
That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
From the seductress who flatters with her words.
Proverbs 7:1-5
Biblical wisdom makes connections. It sees the progression from seed to harvest, from acorn to towering tree. This works both for blessings and curses, for things we want to see happen and things to avoid. “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands, and poverty comes upon you like a thief in the night” makes perfect sense to the wise. To fools it sounds like “catasphrophizing”, making a mountain out a mole hill. Solomon’s command in these verses is take his commands and pile them up within you like treasure. See the world through them, work with them on your fingers, and write them on your heart beside your inmost desires. What will this do? Keep you from a fast and faithless woman, the kind who leads a man away with flattering words. It’s not enough to know about God’s law. You have to make it yours and take it with you wherever you go.
