Jacob left his parents’ house afraid for his life and unsure of the future, but God came down the stairway to heaven to bless him. Luz became Bethel, the house of God. He vowed to follow and honor the Lord with everything he would acquire. So he leaves the Promise Land confident of God’s blessing, in pursuit of a faithful woman at the same place and in same way his mother was found. But it doesn’t go at all like it did for his parents, and instead what happens is a catastrophic mess, the kind that only the kindness of God can use for good.
