After calling on God our Father in heaven, the Lord’s Prayer begins not with praise of His character or actions, but by asking Him to make His name holy. This is the first petition. Even though this prayer is often repeated, “hallow” is an archaic word, little understood today. “Hallowed be Your name” asks God to make His name known and revered in all the earth. What is true of God and what His name deserves is our first desire and item of prayer.
