Forty years pass after Moses leaves Egypt, marries Zipporah, and settles into life as a shepherd in Midian. This makes him 80 years old, not the typical time for a third career. But God has not forgotten His people or His covenant. He is listening and hears their cry. Jesus quotes this passage to stump the Sadducees and astonish the multitudes, adding, “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living”. He changes us now and sends us to change the world.
