Cities of Refuge

Passage: Joshua 20:1-9

The law of God is filled with wisdom, justice, goodness, kindness, and practical love. We see this in the corners of fields left unharvested for poor gleaners (Lev. 23:22), the requirement to favor neither rich nor poor (Lev. 19:15), the command to love your neighbor as yourself (Lev. 19:18), and the institution of lex talionis where the punishment must fit the crime. No wonder the psalmist prays “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day!” (Ps. 119:97). The ceremonial aspects of Old Testament law have been fulfilled by Christ and we no longer designate cities in the Promise Land (cf. Col. 2:14), but the principles behind cities of refuge bear lasting fruit in the kingdom of the risen Christ.
