The Seven Deadly Sins: Lust

Preacher:

The idea of seven deadly sins goes back at least to the Latin church father Tertullian in the late second and early third century. In 590 AD Gregory the Great put them into the form that has been recognized and exposited ever since. All sins consist of rebellion against God, but not all sins are equally bad (cf. Matt. 23:23). All sins break fellowship with God, but grievous sins take us far away from Him. The seven deadlies are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, anger, envy, and pride. Gregory thought this order ascends in ungodliness, which is hard to support scripturally. All sin leads to death, and since Christ died for our sin and ransomed us from death, we’re to mortify our sins and walk in the Spirit.
